A landscape

Pestonji Bomanji, popularly known as the “Indian Rembrandt”, was a renowned Parsi painter. At the age of thirteen, he graduated from the Sir J.J.School of Art, where his talent was recognised by its Principal, John Griffiths, who invited him to join the Ajanta mural expedition. His participation in several painting expeditions to Ajanta played an important role in shaping his mature artistic style and technique, and he eventually headed the expedition in 1880. Although Bomanji is particularly known for his portraits of the Parsi community, he also excelled as a landscape painter. His untitled oil painting is a captivating example of this aspect of his work. The landscape appears to capture a tranquil scene somewhere between Bombay and Ajanta, where the soft pink glow of the dusky sky casts an ethereal light over the land below, creating a serene and atmospheric effect.
