Ustad Mansur, titled Nadir-Ul-Asr meaning Unequalled of his age, was an extremely prominent artist from the era of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, was immensely famous for his Natural paintings and portraits of various flora and fauna. His fame in the natural arts domain was not his only speciality though, as he is also known to have painted various portraits of individuals and human characters as well throughout his artistic career. This specific piece portrays the Siberian Crane or the White-Naped Crane. His portrayal of this crane is apparently drawn from his observation of the parents of the bird who were domesticated and observed in captivity under Shah Jahan. The most extensive pre-existing research work has been done on Mansur’s work by Asok Kumar Das who mentioned the domestication theory in his PhD thesis. Later on in the book titled ‘Wonders of nature : Ustad Mansur at the Mughal court’ from 2012, he goes on to iron out the dating of the artwork to 1625. This piece specifically is a perfect depiction of the naturalistic artwork that dominated much of Mansur’s catalogue of artistry, it shows his mastery with colors and his impressive knowledge of the anatomy of the crane to very minute details. The artwork is currently housed at the Indian Museum, Kolkata as cited by Asok Kumar in his book.
