Artist:Angelo Morbelli
| Support Type: | Canvas |
| Paint Type: | Oil Paint |
| Current Location: | Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Buenos Aires, Argentina |
| Location History: | The painting was exhibited in Milan in 1906 in an international exhibition held in connection with the inauguration of the Simplon Park tunnel. It attracted critical attention, including from Ugo Ojetti. Eduardo Schiaffino, director of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires, encountered the work during his European collecting trip and acquired it for the museum. The work subsequently entered the permanent collection of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires. In 1907, Morbelli also sent a second version of the painting to an international exhibition in Rome, with some changes to the composition. |
The painting turns an ordinary card game into a quiet study of old age, isolation, and companionship. The figures are absorbed in the game, but the heavy shadows and backlighting create a sense of emotional distance, making the gathering feel almost as much about solitude as social interaction. Morbelli’s Divisionist handling of light gives the dark interior a subtle vibrancy, while the restrained setting keeps attention on the men and their small gestures. To me, the card game becomes a kind of social ritual against loneliness—a simple everyday activity that offers structure, company, and a brief sense of belonging in later life.
