Lin Liang (ca. 1416-1480) was a Cantonese painter who specialized in bird-and-flower paintings. He was especially famous for his paintings of eagles, and Two Eagles (or Two Hawks in a Thicket; also called Winter Eagles) is one of his most outstanding works. This painting of two magnificent eagles is executed in ink and colors on silk. The image of the two large birds is complemented by the vastness of the sky: one is perched on a rocky hillside while the other one is perched in the branches. The lines of the brush are full of vigor and speed, reminiscent of the running hand of cursive script.
The subject of this painting is the heroic and fearless spirit that was admired by the people of the Ming dynasty. The birds have proud eyes and a firm and determined stance, which gives them a heroic appearance. Moreover, the image of these eagles is associated with solitude and isolation from society. The simplicity of the image, the use of black and gray inks, and the boldness of the strokes demonstrate the rebellious spirit of Lin Liang and his desire to create a new style. True, his contemporaries were more inclined towards bright colors and intricate plots typical of the Hangzhou school. However, Lin Liang went his own way, presenting the viewer with a bird-and-flower painting that is close to the spirit of calligraphy.
This painting has a symbolic meaning that was also popular in the Ming dynasty. This work, like many others in this period, extols the virtue of an individual, his happiness, and strength. It is necessary to look closely at the placement of the two eagles in the picture: only one is visible, the other is partially hidden by tree roots and branches. The entire vast expanse of heaven and earth belongs to these two lonely birds. Thus, this painting is a symbol of the rebellious spirit and courage of an individual, who has long been opposed to the established order.
I think ''Two Eagles'' represents strength, independence, and courage. The eagles look very powerful and confident, even though they are alone in such a large landscape. To me, this makes them seem like individuals who are not afraid to separate themselves from society or go against what is expected of them.
I also think the way Lin Liang uses mostly black and grey ink makes the painting feel more serious and powerful. His quick and strong brushstrokes make the eagles look full of energy. The fact that one eagle is partly hidden also gives the painting a feeling of mystery and loneliness.
Overall, I think the main message of the painting is about being strong and staying true to yourself. The eagles can represent people who are willing to stand on their own and not follow everyone else. Even though being different can make someone feel isolated, the painting shows that it can also make them strong and independent.
