Govardhan was a prominent figure in the domain of visual arts during the seventeenth century Mughal era. Through his paintings, he depicted the history of the Mughal kings and worked on the illustrations of Baburnama as well. The spiritual and emotional depth of the subjects are highlighted beautifully through this painter's knack for bright colours, rich use of firm lines while drawing. His paintings are figure based and the brush strokes are intentionally structured unlike the timid, hurried brush strokes of many Modernist artists. This painting showcases Timur, Babur and Humayun: three significant figures in the history of Mughal ancestry. The artwork features Timur seated on the throne in the middle and dressed in rich, bright blue clothes. He hands over the precious bejeweled crown to Babur in order to instruct him to continue his legacy through the expansion of the Mughal empire. As he wishes for prosperity, the figure in the right side of the painting remains seated patiently with hands crossed over his folded knees. He knows he's the future of this empire as he's Humayun. Humayun's presence lights up the picture as well and is contextually significant although it is known how his reign was short lived. The extravagant thrones of each of these figures portray the regal aesthetics of Mughal art. Three ministers are painted at a comparatively lower position than the Mughal kings. The names of these counsels are Bayram Khan, Mirza Shah Rukh and Mirza Rustom. The use of perfectly bright colours to paint this important scene of imagining the ancestral history of the Mughal kings of contemporary India is done by Govardhan.
What draws my attention in this painting is the emphasis on continuity across generations rather than on the achievements of a single ruler: by portraying Timur alongside Babur and Humayun, the artist presents the dynasty as a lasting legacy built on succession, leadership, and shared identity; the careful composition conveys dignity and authority, but it also suggests the importance of preserving memory through portraiture. To me, the artwork reflects the idea that political power is strengthened by history and by the connection between past, present, and future generations.
