*Thomas Holroyd Reads in His Palanquin* is a Company School painting made by Shaikh Muhammad Amir of Karraya. He was a well known painter of the nineteenth century and worked in Calcutta. In this painting, Thomas Holroyd is sitting inside a covered palanquin and reading a book. The palanquin is being carried by Indian bearers. Holroyd looks quite relaxed while the bearers are doing the hard work of carrying him. The artist has shown many small details in the painting. The clothes of the bearers, their body positions and their movements are clearly visible. The palanquin and the long carrying pole are also drawn carefully. its background gives some idea about the surroundings where this scene is taking place. They used of simple colours and thin lines makes the figures and objects easy to see. Shaikh Muhammad Amir was known for painting people, animals, houses, servants and different types of transport. Many of his paintings show the daily life of people living in Calcutta during the Company period. His paintings have details which can be seen in Indian miniature painting, but he also used a more realistic way of showing people and their surroundings. I find the contrast between Thomas Holroyd and the bearers interesting. Holroyd is sitting comfortably and reading, while the bearers are using their physical strength to carry him. The painting doesn't show a big historical event, it shows a normal moment of everyday life. This makes the painting useful for understanding the people, outfit and transport of that era.
