Fra Bartolomeo was a Florentine Renaissance painter. He mostly painted religious subjects. Evident by the fact that most of the Renaissance paintings were commissioned by the Catholic Church. Most things were allegorical and were done in large scale in frescos. Church pieces were initially done in tempera on panel and later on, in oil on canvas. Although portraiture was also common and with the growth of Humanism, classical themes became popular. Bartolomeo spent most of his life and career in Florence, the hub of Renaissance art. He worked as an apprentice under Cosimo Rosselli. Bartolomeo mostly painted static portrayals of the Virgin and the child. By 1504, he developed by a High Renaissance style. Thus, his paintings were more realistic, solid linear perspective and had chiaroscuro styling. High Renaissance was afterall a burst of creative output. The marked features of Bartolomeo's works were small figures who were draped.
"The Vision of Saint Bernard" was one of his remarkable oil painting. This is reportedly his first work after his mystical crisis. The subject revolves around the poised Virgin Mary with baby Jesus in her arms being carried forward by angels towards Saint Bernard. The saints on the right hand side are transfixed and are almost frozen by the visual. In the background, we can see a city landscape. At the bottom, we find a small tablet and another image of crucifixion leaning against a book.
