The Virgin and Child with Saints

Artist:Pisanello
Support Type: Wood Panel
Paint Type: Egg Tempera
Current Location: National Gallery, London, UK

The Virgin and Child with Saints Anthony Abbot and George is an oil painting on panel painted by an Italian artist named Pisanello between 1435-1441. In the Virgin and Child with Saints Anthony Abbot and George, the Madonna and Christ Child are depicted in the upper half of the painting, and there is a bright sun burst behind them. At the bottom of the painting are Saints Anthony Abbot and George, in an outdoor setting with trees. Saints Anthony Abbot is holding a bell and a boar, while Saint George is depicted as a knight. The unique aspect about this particular painting is the manner in which Pisanello divides the painting into two distinct parts. The top portion appears peaceful and divine in nature, whereas the bottom portion is quite earthy and contains elements such as the saints, the animals, the trees and the rock formations. It draws the viewer's attention to each element contained within the painting. Pisanello was especially renowned for his ability to capture the likeness of the animal world. This painting also captures the spirit of art from the early Renaissance, which was marked by its fascination with nature, attire, and graceful depictions. What I particularly like about the painting is how the artist has managed to integrate spiritual significance in his work, while at the same time being able to bring into it elements from real life. From the small size of the painting, it can be inferred that it was probably made for personal use.
