The Temptation of St. Anthony by Salvator Rosa portrays the time when Saint Anthony was besieged by horrible and terrifying demons in an attempt to put his faith to the test. One of the things which strike me in this piece is that, amidst all the turmoil which goes on, the saint manages to remain calm and resolute, illustrating his absolute faith in God. The dramatic use of light and colors, as well as the bizarre-looking human-animal hybrids which the artist used, create a mysterious and eerie environment. Rather than portraying success, Rosa shows the internal battle of the saint.
