The Ta'ziah Procession of Muharram

Artist:Sewak Ram
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Gouache
Current Location: Private collection

This Patna School artwork by Sewak Ram depicts a Ta'ziah procession during Muharram. The painting embodies an important characteristic of the Patna School, which is, its ability to provide a glimpse into the local environment, clothing, livelihoods and religious festivals of nineteenth-century India. Such scenes appealed to British East India Company officials, who collected these paintings as records and souvenirs of the places in which they lived and worked. Sewak Ram presents the mourning procession in an orderly manner, with men dressed in white carrying colourful alams and models of tazia shrines, while water bearers appear at the front. The contrast between the colourful alams and models of tazia shrines and the subdued landscape and clothes of the mourners is particularly striking. The muted colours of the trees and the sky seem to almost participate in the solemnity of the procession of mourners, giving the scene and atmosphere of quiet grief.
