The age-old Christian belief of the struggle between good and evil, life and death, and Heaven versus Hell is portrayed in this painting. This is still seen today as a depiction of the angel and devil on each shoulder, both advocating for the two moral choices between "good" and "evil". The young boy is taking his last breaths as his body is too weak to go on. This moment can be interpreted in two ways: first, the angel and devil are there to try and gain a soul for their respective sides of Heaven and Hell or secondly, the angel is protecting his soul, while the devil is trying to prematurely steal the boy's life as he struggles at the border between life and death. There is more evidence to support the latter as, there is a bowl of half eaten broth, indicating that the child is still capable of eating, weak as though he may be. While his eyes are sunken, and body drooping, he is still not entirely limp and is being held up by his mother, who is perhaps praying and weeping for his recovery. Finally, the angel's stance is protective, holding up a hand to ward off the demon who is represented with bat wings and a snake curled around his hand. The art style is Neoclassical as the figures of the mother, son, angel and devil are reminiscent of the Renaissance. However, the artist also makes use of the Baroque techniques of light and shadow to show the darkness surrounding the demon and providing more depth to the painting. The details and symbols make the story of the painting that much more immersive, such as the stripes on the woman's shawl, the paisley patterns on the blanket and the various details differentiating the angel and demon such as the different wings, the snake and their clothes. There is also the use of light and dark to contrast between the sick child's expression in shadow and the mother's weeping illuminated. The angel's shadow falls on the child making them a physical presence in the painting.
The painting shows a struggle between good and evil. The angel stands guard over a child. The demon stands nearby full of temptation, darkness and death. I feel the power of the three figures in the painting. The child looks small. Hurt, as if the child cannot protect itself. The angel’s hand over the child feels like a shield. The angel is stepping in to help the child.
The mother is also important. The mother is not merely in the background. The mother’s face shows fear, sadness and maybe hope. The mother adds a feeling to the scene. The dark background makes the light around the figures more noticeable. The dark background makes the moment feel urgent and heavy.
To me the painting is not about religion. The painting is about how it feels to face pain, loss and the unknown future. The angel and demon fighting can be seen as choices that we all face. The choices include what to believe, how to act and who to trust. The painting reminds us that we can be weak in body but strong, in spirit. The painting connects the softness of the child’s body with the strength of the angel’s protection. The painting reminds me that we all need help. The painting shows that
