Akbar, the third great Mughal emperor of India, initiated a deliberate process of knowledge transfer between Turko-Central Asian, Sanskritic, and Persian intellectual traditions. His translation projects went beyond mere linguistic exercises, serving as an important means of cultural and intellectual exchange within the Mughal court. As part of this process, he commissioned his leading court artists, including Sur Das, to illustrate the Chingiz-nama, a Persian historical chronicle documenting the legacy and history of Chinggis Khan. This folio from the Chingiz-nama depicts the siege of Arbela during the reign of Hulagu Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan. The manuscript chronicles the conquests of Akbar’s Mongol ancestors, whose armies expanded across Asia from Siberia to the Mediterranean during the 13th century. In the painting, Hulagu Khan is leading his forces through West Asia following the sack of Baghdad in 1258 and the fall of the Abbasid Caliphate. After the victory at Baghdad, he besieged the Kurdish Garrison at Arbela, employing the Mongol strategy of encircling the opponents from multiple sides. In the lower right, the Mongol leader is depicted mounted on a white horse, while the lord of the citadel, dressed in blue, approaches him to negotiate the fortress's surrender. Hence, through this folio, Sur Das Gujarati demonstrates his mastery of narrative painting by bringing a complex historical episode of life.
The Siege of Arbela, associated with the era of Hulagu Khan, portrays the violence and military strategies of Mongol conquest. The fortified city becomes a symbol of resistance against overwhelming forces.
