The siege of Arbela in the era of Hulagu Khan

Artist:Sur Das

I think the painting represents not only the Mongol conquest but also the ideas of power and authority. What I find interesting is how a violent event like a siege is shown through a very detailed and organized composition, with so many figures taking part in the scene. The Cleveland Museum of Art describes the work as being dynamic in its composition and gestures, while still keeping the figures with organized spaces. I think this makes the chaos of the battle easier to understand visually. The meeting between Hulagu Khan on the white horse and his defeated opponent particularly stands out to me, as it shifts the focus from just the warfare to the moment of surrender. Since the painting was made more than 300 years after the actual event for Akbar's court, I also see it as a way of remembering and visually recreating the history associated with the Mughal dynasty's Mongol ancestry.
