Artist:Anant
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: British Library, London , United Kingdom
Location History:Made for Mughal emperor Jahangir, then purchased by Sotheby’s on 29 march 1961

The painting illustrates the charming scene of interaction among a ruler, a devotee and the many petitioners who have gathered before him. Instead of highlighting the royal power alone, the scene draws attention to communication and compassion. It shows a dialogue between the king, the devotee and the people who have gathered with their complaints. The composition of the figures makes the scene feel almost approachable, as if we are witnessing a moment when ordinary people are actually being heard. The gestures, postures and the placement of the figures create a gentle rhythm within the scene. The architectural setting of the scene gives the painting a depth while separating different parts of the story. The colors give a character to the painting . The bright yellow, greens , blues and earthy shades animate the clothes of the figures against the quiet architectural tones. Each figure is drawn with such details that engages a purpose to them . The most positive aspect of the painting is the idea of listening. It draws a scene of authority in balance with patience, dialogue and the possibility of receiving justice. The painting is surrounded by persian text, which forms part of the Anvār-i Suhaylī. The written narrative and the painted scene allows to experience the story through words as well as Anant’s visual interpretation.
