The school of painting

Well, looking at Painting School (1871), you get this immediate sense of stepping right into a quiet, focused room, it looks like an art class or a studio from way back in the day. The whole scene is caught from behind a row of students, so you're mostly seeing the backs of their heads and coats. There are about, um, five painters all lined up on these chunky wooden stools, and they’re completely absorbed in what they're doing. They’ve all got their easels up right in front of them, which kind of blocks our view of their actual canvases, but you can tell they are working hard. Most of them are wearing these dark, heavy-looking jackets, except for the guy on the far right who has a slightly lighter grey coat on. Oh, and the person second from the left is wearing a really thick, dark robe or cloak with a big hood, which feels a bit different from the others. In the background, sitting up on a slightly raised platform, there’s a female model. She’s the focal point for everyone in the room, obviously, but she’s painted in a soft, kind of blurry way. She is wearing a light-colored dress or top, maybe a cream or pale yellow and her hair is piled up high on her head. She seems to be just sitting patiently, maybe holding a pose, waiting for the class to finish up. The room itself feels very earthy and old-fashioned. The walls are this dusty, muted grey-green color, and the floor looks like plain, worn wood or concrete. There’s a lot of loose stuff around, and you can see a couple of empty wooden easels standing in the background, along with a small dark hat hanging on a peg stand next to the model. The light in the room is soft, filtering in from somewhere unseen, creating gentle shadows on the backs of the artists and making the whole place feel warm, quiet, and deeply focused. It really captures a real, unvarnished moment of people just learning and practicing their craft together.

Giacomo Favretto had a relatively brief career as a painter. He was born in a modest family and was particularly known for his genre painting and realism. "The School of Painting" is a well detailed and descriptive scene of the inside workings of a painting school. Five students are seen painting the model in front of them. The warm undertones of the paints used provide a cozy atmosphere. The yellow-brownish background is contracted with their stark black uniforms. This artwork shows the tradition of the celebrated art schools and the legacies of the prodigies. Even though the painters are concentrated on their individual canvases, there is an air of unity among them. This unity can be defined as the unity of brilliance and creativity.
