The Punishment of Khwaja Mu'azzam

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Gouache
Current Location: Chester Beatty (Library), Dublin
Location History:It was painted in Mughal India, during the composition of Akbarnama (The Memoirs of Akbar)

Attributed to Farrukh Chela, "The Punishment of Khwaja Mu'azzam" depicts Akbar’s dramatic assertion of imperial authority. The turbulent Jamuna becomes an active force of danger as condemned men are thrown from boats into its waters. Overlapping figures, vibrant colours, and gold heighten the chaos, while the punishment of Akbar’s own half-uncle emphasises the uncompromising reach of Mughal justice.
