“The Moonlit Night on the Dnieper” by Arkhip Kuindzhi is an incredible work in the luminist style of the neo-impressionist tradition. Using light effects and a strong understanding of contrasting colours, Kuindzhi is able to expertly create a clear illusion of illumination, a skill that he was famed for in his mature period. Moonlight is the subject of the work, not the moon. The focus of the observer is on the different parts of the work illuminated by the moon, such as the waves, the clouds, or the sides of houses. The work captures the landscape so perfectly that the painting seems almost photographic.
