Sawlaram Laxman Haldankar was one of the most prominent and celebrated artists mastered and known for his command in watercolour in India before independence. By 1923, Haldankar had spent roughly two decades honing the academic realist style he first learned at the Sir J. J. School of Art under Cecil Burns. The Mahomaden Pilgrim is painted in oil colours rather than the watercolours he was best known for. This also shows his versatility as an artist. This piece won him the gold medal at the Bombay Art Society's annual exhibition in 1925 resulting in Haldankar earning a distinguished place among Bombay's leading realist painters and contemporaries. The composition shows a Muslim elderly bearded man wrapped in a shawl, wearing a cap standing against rugged mountains at the back. He is carrying a hookah and small travel bundle (potli) at his side that indicates he is a pilgrim on the move. Haldankar seems to be most drawn towards the delicate play of light and shadow on the surface rather than the narrative itself. He focused more on how light falls across the folds of cloth, catches in the beard, and settles into the creases of an aged, weathered face. His attention to details is remarkable as it keeps the figure from being interpreted as a type or a piece of ethnographic reference rather there's a distinct characteristic to the man in a sense that Haldankar studied him as closely as he studied the aristocrats and officials who sat for his commissioned portraits.
The painting carries a persona that might be giving character to the person in the frame as well as all the pilgrims present. It acts as a tribute to them in the most natural way possible. The way the colors, light and shadow cast a type of environment unto the canvas, it gives me the chilly dusty air in the room when i observe it carefully. It shows the enjoyment as well as the struggles a pilgrim carries by fate and not by choice.
