The Madonna and Child with Saints and a Donor

This exquisite art piece by the Sienese Italian painter, Giovanni Antonio Bazzi famously known as Sodoma depicts the divine figure of Virgin Mary (a central deity in Christianity) with Christ. Along with them, we see Saint Peter and Saint Catherine on either of the sides. There is also an Olivetan monk (Order of Our Lady of Mount Olivet) kneeling below to receive the blessings of the Mother of God and the Christ. Virgin Mary and Christ are enthroned on a ‘baldacchino’ supported by two-winged angels above. Saint Peter is presenting the donor to Madonna and her Child while Saint Catherine stands on the left of the Virgin Mary. Trees are also obscurely visible at the very end of the painting. Saint Peter is frequently depicted holding keys, as Christ entrusted him with the keys to heaven. The two little keys hanging just below the donor’s elbow here are cleverly echoed in the larger keys held by Saint Peter. We can clearly see the influences of Leonardo da Vinci’s painting style adapted by Sodoma, for instance the soft lightning and figures painted with gentle grace. The figures of Virgin Mary and Christ are relatively larger than the rest, allowing the focus of a viewer to directly capture the divinity of them as the focal point of the painting.
