Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1527-1593), an Italian Renaissance artist birthed in Milan, was famously known for his imaginative portrait compositions from everyday objects such as animals, books, flowers, fruits, and vegetables. Giuseppe’s career started with him designing stained-glass windows, frescoes, and tapestries for churches. He later got designated as the painter at the court of Emperor Ferdinand I (Vienna, 1562), then for Maximilian II and Rudolf II (Prague). A part of Arcimboldo’s career included being assigned as a court decorator and costume designer. He had very unique and original ideas reflected in his paintings such as the fascination of Renaissance with puzzles, symbolism, and the erratic truth rather than just fantasy. After Giuseppe’s death, majority of his contribution and artworks were pushed under the covers. It was in the 20th century, when his artworks resurfaced and became widely discussed amongst Surrealists, for example Salvador Dali.
“The Librarian” (1562) by Giuseppe Arcimboldo stands out as his most famous composite portraits, and was done during the period when he served as a court painter to the emperors of Habsburg.
