An Italian Renaissance painter, Domenico di Tommaso Curradi di Doffo Bigordi, also known as Domenico Ghirlandaio was born on 1448 in Florence, Italy. He is known for his large, colorful, and highly detailed frescoes . He started his training as a goldsmith in his family business before switching to painting. He was influenced by famous painters like Alesso Baldonivetti and Andrea del Verrocchio. His style emphasized the use of fast drying paints on wet plaster, which let him quickly create realistic artwork that decorated churches and public building across Italy.
The painting, "The Last Supper" was created by Domenico Ghirlandaio in 1480. This painting was Ghirlandaio's first major masterpiece. It made him famous as one of the finest fresco painters of his come. The painting shows the thirteen figures sitting along a table in the traditional way, Jesus is in the centre, and Judas is separated on the opposite side facing the viewer. However, this painting stands out from older versions because of its background architecture. He painted a detailed open porch (loggia) that looks out onto a garden, complete with birds sitting in a wooden lattice and trees seen through arched windows. The orange and cedar trees represent the beauty and perfection of Paradise, while the palm tree and cypress stands as warnings and signs pointing toward Jesus's future suffering, sacrifice, and death. The flying and resting birds also have a deep symbolic meanings, like the hawk chasing a duck represents the eternal battle between good and evil, or stands as a symbol of Jesus sacrificing himself to save humanity. On the left side of the painting, there is a beautiful peacock with its colorful tail, as peacocks shed and renew their feathers every spring, there were commonly used to symbolize immortality and rebirth. Along the table, crystal clear water jugs and various fruits are painted with elegant detail. Even the bright tablecloth is beautifully decorated with fine stitching, featuring small dragons along the edges. Everthing on the table has its own meaning, like the ripe apricots represent sin, the simple lettuce stands for penance, and the rich red cherries and pomegranate point toward the sacrifice the Christ, who sits right in the middle. Right at the centre, Jesus sits surrounded by the Apostles, just as he announces that one of them will betray him. Judas is easy to spot sitting alone on a lower stool on the opposite side of the table, holding the pouch of money he received for his betrayal. Following an older style is seen in Andrea del Castagno's version, Peter firmly grips a knife in his hand, while John, the youngest apostle, rests his head amd falls gently asleep near Jesus's right arm. Every movement and gesture in the painting is calm and controlled, creating a peaceful and balanced atmosphere rather than one full of high drama. Both side of the table and on the flower vase, there is an interesting detail, the special symbols of the monks who lived at the Ognissanti church. Their old coat of arms features a double cross along with the letters OSSC, with a small "i" tucked inside the letter C, in short, these letters stand for the Latin phrase 'OMNES SANCTI', which means 'All Saints'. The artist used neat and controlled brushwork on wet plaster. He combined clean outlines with smooth shading to make the people, clothing, and background look more realistic. He used earthly yellows, soft reds, greens, and blues, brightened up with touches of white.
After the flood of 1966, the fresco had to be carefully removed from the walls and restored. During the process, experts discovered a sinophia- the original preparatory sketch, underneath the painting, which is now displayed nearby. This early sketch reveals that Jesus originally had a very different expression. The present face on the painting is actually the result of a 17th century restoration, when a painter named Carlo Maratta completely repainted and changed the head. Another feature of the artwork is how carefully the shadows of the figure are defined. These shadows were painted with great detail, showing that Ghirlandaio carefully studied how natural light would enter the room from the windows on the left wall.
