The 1832 creation by Karl Bryullov, Horsewoman (also referred to as The Horsewoman or Rider), is one of the most famous variants of Romantic portraiture in Russia. This large-scale artwork portrays Giovanina Pacini, the adopted daughter of Countess Yuliya Samoylova, who was both the close friend and patroness of the artist, entering in great style on her horse into the yard of an Italian villa. Her younger sister Amazilia is by her side, gazing at her with admiration from the balcony. In this painting, Bryullov skillfully applies techniques of historical painting to equestrian painting and creates an arresting scene full of dynamics. A beautiful black horse is rising and moving gracefully while the rider appears calm and composed. Giovanina is perfectly posed on the horse and wears an elegant white riding dress of delicate fabric and a blue headscarf that floats in the wind. The atmosphere of the artwork is created thanks to it's surroundings. On the one hand, the environment is formed by rich greens, clouds, and the sun’s rays shining through them. The artist has used his knowledge of light masterfully in his picture through accurate depiction of clear surfaces like silk, lace, horse hair, and dog’s fur. Horsewoman reflects the combination of movement, theatricality, and elegance.
