The Holy Family

Support Type: Wood Panel
Paint Type: Mixed Media
Current Location: J. Paul Getty Museum

What stands out to me in The Holy Family is the way Romano brings sacred figures into an intimate, almost domestic setting without losing their spiritual significance. The Christ child and Saint John appear absorbed in their interaction, while the Virgin’s protective gesture gives the scene a sense of tenderness. However, the darker background and sharply illuminated bodies prevent the painting from feeling entirely peaceful. There is a subtle tension between the warmth of the family group and the solemn religious meaning behind it. I also find the woman carrying the basket particularly interesting, as she connects the intimate scene to the ritual traditions surrounding Christ’s birth. Rather than simply presenting an idealised holy family, Romano creates a layered image where human affection, religious symbolism and theatrical composition work together.
