The Holy Family

Support Type: Wood Panel
Paint Type: Mixed Media
Current Location: J. Paul Getty Museum

The painting represents the relationship between the Virgin Mary, the Christ Child, Saint John the Baptist, and the other holy figures. I interpret the scene as a reminder of Christ's future purpose and the spiritual significance of his birth. The scroll held by Saint John and the book opened by the infant Jesus suggest knowledge, prophecy, and the beginning of a new religious era. The figures' expressions and gestures make the sacred story feel like a personal family encounter rather than a distant religious event. The contrast between the illuminated figures and the darker landscape also draws attention to the people at the centre of the composition. Overall, I think the painting combines religious symbolism with human tenderness, showing how an intimate family moment can communicate a larger message about faith, sacrifice, and redemption.
