The Good Shepherd as the Mystical Lamb

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: Private Collection
Location History:The work was offered as Lot 48 in a sale by La Suite Subastas in November 2023, where it was described as an oil on canvas by Francisco Martinez dating to about 1750. It achieved the artist's current auction record, selling for approximately US$65,433. Following the auction, the painting passed into a private collection. No museum acquisition or public exhibition has been announced.

What I find most striking about this painting is the unusual way it represents Christ. Instead of the familiar image of the Good Shepherd carrying a lamb, Christ becomes the Lamb himself, emphasizing the idea of sacrifice and redemption. Surrounded by angels and bathed in radiant light, he appears both gentle and majestic, inviting the viewer to reflect on the spiritual meaning of his offering. To me, the artwork combines rich symbolism with emotional intensity, transforming a traditional Christian theme into a powerful meditation on faith, devotion, and divine love.
