"The Frog Princess" or "The Frog Tsarevna" is a part of a cycle of paintings called "The Poem of Seven Tales ". Viktor Mikhailovich Vasnetsov felt he was a part of the old Russia and he felt that his ideas of fairytales, myths and folklores should be introduced to the New Russia of the late 19th century as well as early 20th century. So he focussed on bringing to life different fairy tales and folktales including the tale of the Frog Princess. The painting contains a blend of historical motifs while hiding an undercurrent of the disdain for modern politics as was Vasnetsov's habit of including his philosophy within the art.
The Princess, Vasilisa the Wise, is frozen in the midst of a dance, waving her handkerchief. Minstrels surround her playing instruments and looking very cheerful. Across the pond that has swans and ducks swimming, there is a village with peasant girls having their own dance in celebration next to the water. The depth of the scenery is seen through the arch and more importantly, the princess seems to be waving goodbye to the agrarian class as new reforms have been brought forward for the industrial revolution. The green dress resembles her frog skin that is burned away by the youngest prince. There is an ethereal otherworldly beauty found in these paintings which captures the same feelings one has when reading these old Russian fairytales.
I interpret The Frog Tsarevna as more than a simple illustration of a Russian fairy tale. The dancing princess appears to represent a connection between the magical world of folklore and the traditional Russian way of life. The musicians, village, lake and peasant dancers create a strong sense of cultural harmony, while the princess's movement gives the scene a feeling of transition or farewell. The painting can therefore be understood as Vasnetsov's attempt to preserve an idealized image of Russian folklore and cultural identity during a period of rapid social and political change. The combination of beauty, movement and symbolism makes the artwork feel both celebratory and slightly melancholic. This interpretation is consistent with scholarship describing Vasnetsov's fairy-tale cycle as reflecting his ideals, philosophical ideas, and responses to the upheavals of his time.
