Gabriel José de Ovalle's Flagellation belongs to a fifteen-canvas cycle depicting the Passion of Christ, signed and dated 1749, created for the Franciscan Colegio de Propaganda Fide in Guadalupe, in what is now the state of Zacatecas, Mexico. Within this series, Ovalle situates the flagellation not merely as a moment of suffering but as an explanation ; several art historians have pointed to his treatment, alongside a similar series by Ignacio Berben, as depicting the flagellation as the literal origin of the wound later found on Christ's back at the crucifixion, linking successive stages of the Passion into one continuous physical narrative. What strikes me most about this painting is how Ovalle uses it as connective tissue rather than an isolated spectacle. Viewed as part of a full cycle originally arranged around a cloister, meant to be walked past slowly by friars in a spirit of daily meditation, the flagellation becomes less a scene to recoil from and more a station to sit with ; one beat in a larger, cumulative meditation on bodily suffering. Painted for men who had devoted their lives to this order, I read it as functioning almost like religious muscle memory: repetition built into the very architecture, each canvas training the eye and the conscience simultaneously. It's less about depicting cruelty and more about instilling endurance as a spiritual discipline ; pain rendered not as tragedy, but as a kind of devotional rehearsal.
