Nanha’s The Emperor Shah Jahan with His Son Dara Shikoh (c. 1620) presents a rare, surprisingly tender look at the Mughal emperor. Shah Jahan is sitting with his young son Dara Shikoh and both of them are apparently absorbed in arranging precious stones before them. Shah Jahan has a great ruby in his hand, and Dara has a peacock fan and a jewelled ornament of his own. Their clothes are elaborately decorated and the cushions, jewellery and furniture strewn around them all speak volumes about the sheer wealth of the Mughal court. And yet the painting doesn't feel like a stiff, formal display of royal power. But instead there is something almost domestic about the scene. Shah Jahan looks at ease and the closeness of father and son makes it easy to imagine a quiet moment between the two of them without guards in the way.
That simple exchange becomes more meaningful when you remember who these two really were. Dara wasn't just a kid hanging out with his dad. He was a Mughal prince, raised in one of the most powerful dynasties of the time, and destined to play an important part in the empire himself. In this context, the jewels are no longer simple ornament. They talk of the riches and the advantages into which Dara had been born, and of the royal world to which he was being drawn slowly.
