The Dry Feast

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: DAG, India

With Untitled (A Dry Feast), Hemen Mazumdar has composed an humorous trompe-l'oeil an illusionistic work that intentionally blurs the line between the representation and the reality. In his painting, a troop of cats appear to have overturned an artist's painting of lobsters, presumably in hope of enjoying some nourishment that they have been fooled into seeing as actual food. Paint spatter and an array of brushes can be seen, framing the actions of the cats as a sort of comical 'crime' (while the various other paintings in the backround situate us in an artists studio.) It is, in my opinion, all an excellent commentary on the possibilities and limits of realist art. So true is Mazumdar's illusion that animals too can be taken in by it. A Dry Feast is simply the icing on the cake of this gag; here the cats can look at, and most likely smell the appearance of a Feast, but there is no physical fare, no food, at all. It's the artist's accomplishment being celebrated just as it is being gently made fun of as well.
