There are paintings that break your heart quietly, and Antonello da Messina's The Dead Christ Supported by an Angel is one of them. It holds a stillness that almost feels sacred. What I take away from this painting is a feeling of being held. It is an image of absolute vulnerability met with absolute gentleness. It does not preach. It simply shows you a body, an angel, and a moment of stillness after unimaginable pain. And in that stillness, there is grace.
