The Dance of Salome

Support Type: Wood Panel
Paint Type: Tempera
Current Location: National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C

This painting depicts the mingling of entertainment, revenge and court politics and the ultimate martyrdom of John the Baptist. Multiple moments have been depicted- in the left, John is about to be executed; in the center, Salome dances before the guests; behind her, the severed head is presented on a platter. The contrast between the elegant court feast and the violent execution shows the tension between worldly power and moral truth.
