The Course to the Pasture

Antonio Fontanesi, renowned as the romantic landscape painter from Reggio-Emilia was a prominent artist in Italy. He is widely known for introducing European oil painting techniques in Japan during his visit to the country. The above picture showcases one of his landscape paintings titled ‘The course to the pasture’. It depicts a very serene atmosphere wherein a young boy is seen walking the path with his herd of cattle in a countryside, highlighting a normal rural life. The path has trees on one side providing shade to the travellers. A feeling of solitude and melancholy becomes evident through this painting, as if the nature has overpowered the presence of the handler and his animals. A light illumination of the subject has turned the figures into silhouette. This became possible by the artist because he painted the sky a little dusky and golden with thick brushstrokes. This style of painting was inspired from the French Barbizon school. This painting reflects soft realism, deep emotional intensity and the pastoral cyclic routine in the mid-19th century.
