Veronese captured the moment when Nicholas became a bishop through this work. He is shown kneeling at the center and his presence is highlighted through his deep emerald garment here. The artist did not use any pomp but presented the event through a quiet exchange of gestures. Two more older priests stand close on either side of Nicholas and their white surplices are shining through the use of light. The senior bishop standing on a higher pedestal is leaning forward towards Nicholas to complete the rite. Above them, an angel is drifting down and carrying three objects namely mitre, stole and the cruiser, the same objects that shows that Nicholas was chosen by God rather than by men.
The composition is created in a V-shape where Nicholas is placed at its lowest point. The form naturally pulls the eye downward first, then lets it move upwards through the ranks of figures and finally toward the angel at the top. Except for the use of green in Nicholas’s garment, the colour reappears in small touches elsewhere in the canvas which ties the kneeling saint to the rest of the scene. Pink, blue, and white is used repeatedly as well which has brought overall rhythm to the painting. The rhythm allows the viewer’s gaze to move around the picture rather than settling at one place. Even with the use of rich variety of colour, Veronese does not overwork the surface here. The gold fabric used on the senior bishop’s garment is created by using small dots and flicks of white and yellow paint, and nothing more. The white robe and its heaviness is shown through a few sure strokes of grey and white, which is enough to suggest its folds and weight.
Two witnesses wearing turbans are placed at the back, a small but crucial detail that places the event in Asia Minor, where Nicholas served as bishop of Myra. This is the only known work in present-time which has individually painted this consecration event, since this was considered as one scene within a larger cycle of Nicholas’s life. Painted in 1562 for the abbey church of San Benedetto Po, it was later seized on Napoleon’s orders and eventually entered the National Gallery in 1826.
