Daulat paints himself into the very book he helped illustrate, sitting across from the man whose handwriting fills every page of it. He holds up a picture for us to see, though we can't quite make out what's on it, while the scribe 'Abd al-Rahim leans over his own sheet with a pen still in hand, caught mid sentence almost. Around them the floor is scattered with the actual tools of their trade bound pages, a small knife, pots of pigment, something to drink set within easy reach so the whole scene feels less like a formal portrait and more like a quiet moment stolen from an ordinary working day. Above their heads a shelf holds vessels lined up like a little shrine to craftsmanship itself. The colors are warm and dense, especially in the men's robes, set against a softer pink wall hanging that keeps the eye centered on the two figures. What makes the painting quietly moving is its timing: Jahangir asked Daulat to add this scene years after the manuscript was finished, as if wanting to honor the hands that made it, long after the words themselves were already complete.
