Salih Kashmiri (active ca. late 16th century) was a Mughal court painter who contributed to one of Emperor Akbar’s most ambitious cultural projects: the Razmnama (“Book of War”), the Persian translation of the Sanskrit Mahabharata. Commissioned around 1582–86 and with subsequent illustrated copies (including folios dated ca. 1598–99), the Razmnama aimed to foster intercultural understanding and imperial sovereignty through sulh-i kul (universal peace).
Salih Kashmiri was one of the many artists bearing the "Kashmiri" nisba. Salih's style fits the general look of late Akbar-period painting. There's Persian compositional structure in there, Indian subject matter obviously, and then these odd traces of European technique that filtered into the Mughal atelier through Jesuit engravings.
This folio from Razmnama illustrates one of Bhishma's tales from the epic Mahabharata that highlights a Brahman's intense devotion and how it attracted the attention of the cloud deity Kundadhara, who personally descends from the skies and rewards him. While the story is in an Indian context, the rendering style and the iconography may have been inspired by contemporary Flemish prints. Salih painted Kundadhara riding on or coming out of these big, curling clouds that take up a good chunk of the composition.
The rest of the scene is similar to the composition of the rest of the pages. The Brahmans dressed in detailed, brightly colored clothes. The lines are clean and the compositions seem flat but the artist has included trees and mountains to add a hint of depth to the landscape.
Every Razmnama folio carried the weight of Akbar's ideological project. Salih Kashmiri was one of many painters working on the project, but folios like this one show how effectively the atelier could fold mythology, politics, and genuine pictorial skill into a single page.
