The painting was originally formed and part of the Jahangirnama manuscript produced in the Mughal court. It was later entered in a private collection before becoming part of the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where it is preserved today.
"The Birth of Prince Salim" is one of the finest miniature paintings of Mughal court painter Bishandas, who worked under Emperor Jahangir. The lower portion of the painting portrays attendants and members of the court engaged in celebration, which creates a sense of movement and festivity.
Bishandas used highly refined brushwork, controlled colour harmonies and subtle modelling which creates realistic figures and convincing architectural space. The artist presents different moments of the celebration within a single composition, showing that the birth of an heir was not only a personal event for the royal family but also a significant political and cultural occasion for the Mughal Empire. I find the presence of women, astrologers, attendants, and people receiving gifts especially meaningful because it highlights how many sections of society participated in this event. The detailed architecture, vibrant colours, and carefully arranged figures reflect the wealth, discipline, and artistic excellence of the Mughal court. At the same time, the painting serves as a valuable historical record by preserving the customs, rituals, and everyday life of the period. Overall, I believe the artwork conveys themes of celebration, hope, prosperity, and the preservation of cultural traditions while demonstrating the remarkable skill and storytelling ability of Mughal miniature painters.
