The work commemorates the historic Battle of Magenta, fought on 4 June 1859 during the Second Italian War of Independence. This battle resulted in a decisive Franco-Piedmontese victory over the Austrian forces and opened the way for the liberation of Milan, becoming a crucial step toward the unification of Italy. Induno, who had personally participated in the Italian independence movement, approached the subject with both patriotic enthusiasm and firsthand understanding of military life.
