Support Type: Paper

Location History:Originally part of an illustrated album from Jahangir's reign, later dismembered. This page was bequeathed to the V&A in 1921 by Lady Wantage.

Ustad Mansur’s Turkey Cock drawing masterfully combines the passion for science that was characteristic of the Mughal court. [1] The picture is filled with opaque watercolor and gold, which accurately depict the real specimen that was brought to Bharat by the Portuguese traders. The work of art perfectly demonstrates Tahangir’s curiosity about the foreign world, though the author’s fascination with the unusual feathered creature seems to be purely scientific. However, the intricate floral borders of gold and dense carpet-like background transform this natural history illustration into a true masterpiece of luxury. Thus, the picture is a spectacular symbol of the Mughal court, which successfully combines art and science, making the foreign specimen both extraordinary and accessible.
