Ludovico Carracci’s *Annunciation* exemplifies the reform of Bolognese painting during the Counter-Reformation. Rejecting Late Mannerist complexity, Carracci employs a restrained palette, clear perspective, and simple forms to create an intimate devotional atmosphere. The domestic interior, recognizable furnishings, and view of Bologna connect the biblical event with contemporary life. Mary’s reading, Gabriel’s respectful kneeling, and the modest objects surrounding them emphasize prayer, humility, and Christian virtue. Influenced by Tridentine ideas and Paleotti’s concept of art as a “silent preacher,” the painting prioritizes clarity and spiritual instruction. Its Quattrocento-inspired simplicity is therefore deliberate, making the mystery of the Incarnation accessible and emotionally powerful.
