Segantini creates a dreamlike atmosphere by combining recognisable elements of the natural landscape with idealised and spiritualised figures. The painting can consequently be understood within the Symbolist tendency in late nineteenth-century European art, in which ordinary subjects were often used to express deeper philosophical and spiritual ideas. Rather than presenting motherhood simply as a domestic or personal experience, Segantini transforms it into a universal symbol of life, protection, innocence, and renewal. In my interpretation, The Angel of Life is more than a depiction of a mother and child. It represents the intimate relationship between humanity and nature and suggests that life persists through cycles of growth, vulnerability, and regeneration. The mother embodies protection and love, the child represents innocence and the continuation of existence, and the tree symbolises the enduring cycle of life. Together, these elements convey a contemplative message about the resilience and sacredness of life and the enduring power of motherhood.
