The miniature belongs to the richly collaborative world of Akbar’s imperial atelier, where historical memory was transformed into carefully structured visual narrative. Attributed to Sanvala (Sanwlah), the painting illustrates the ceremonial acclamation of the Nine Standards in 1502, an episode associated with Babur’s early political and military career.
The composition presents ceremony as spectacle. The monumental standards dominate the foreground, their elaborate finials, tassels and vivid colours establishing a striking vertical rhythm. Beneath them, soldiers, horsemen and attendants gather in animated clusters, their gestures directing attention towards the ceremonial action. The white bull provides a striking counterpoint to the densely populated group and anchors the lower register. Above, the landscape recedes through softly coloured hills, trees and architecture, creating a distinctly Persianate spatial atmosphere.
The extensive Persian text demonstrates the intimate relationship between image and historical narration in Mughal manuscripts. Rather than functioning merely as illustration, the miniature transforms the written account into a memorable visual event. Sanvala balances documentary detail with artistic invention: costumes, weapons, standards and military hierarchy communicate imperial order, while the crowded arrangement conveys collective allegiance. The work therefore operates simultaneously as history, spectacle and an image of political legitimacy, demonstrating how Mughal painting could turn military memory into an enduring visual statement.
The miniature transforms a historical military event into a carefully organized visual spectacle. Sanvala emphasizes the Nine Standards through vivid colours and strong vertical forms, while soldiers, horsemen and attendants create movement and collective allegiance. Persianate landscapes and extensive text connect image with historical narration. The work combines documentary detail, political legitimacy and artistic invention.
