The painting is actually inspired by a classical prose text by Li Bai, capturing an intimate night gathering where scholars meet in a private garden to write poetry, share wine, and enjoy the spring blossoms.
When looking at the visual composition, the layout feels very natural as it moves up the scroll. Down in the foreground, you see scholars sitting around tables surrounded by stone paths, blooming peach trees, and intricate garden architecture. I really like how Leng Mei used fine brushwork here—he detailed everything from the folds of their robes to the small decorations on the pavilions. The soft moonlight over the whole scene gives it a calm, almost quiet atmosphere.
Moving toward the upper part of the image, the garden fades into misty mountain peaks and broad landscape views. This realistic sense of depth shows how Leng Mei was influenced by Western perspective techniques, which he learned from his teacher Jiao Bingzhen. Lastly, the calligraphy written in the top corner brings everything back to Li Bai’s poem about how fast time passes. Overall, it’s a brilliant mix of story, landscape, and delicate brush technique.
