Spotted Forktail by Abu'l Hasan (ca. 1610–15) stands as a masterpiece of Mughal naturalism, seamlessly blending imperial court portraiture with precise empirical observation. Rendered in opaque watercolor and gold on paper within the lavish margins of the Shah Jahan Album, the composition places the native Himalayan bird in crisp profile atop a rocky outcrop against a soft, atmospheric background with a low horizon line. Abu'l Hasan utilizes a focused color scheme defined by the high-contrast monochrome of the bird’s black-and-white spotted plumage, grounded by the earthy slate grays, muted ochres, and subtle olive greens of the landscape, all framed by the radiant gold floral scrollwork of the album border Hashiya. The artist’s mastery of technique Pardakht shines through his painstaking brushwork using single-hair brushes to capture individual feather barbules, combined with the application of crushed mica particles on the eye to catch the light and impart a dynamic, living luminescence. Built up through delicate, burnished layers of pigment, the work exemplifies the fusion of artistic sophistication and scientific curiosity that defined Emperor Jahangir’s royal atelier.
