'Smiling Girl' is a part of a collection of paintings that Abram Arkhipov painted in the 1920s to 30s of peasant women in parts of rural Russia. The painter often travelled through Northern Russia and the coast of the White Sea and he painted scenes that he saw in the countryside. In his collection of peasant women, he depicted them in their traditional dresses that were mainly red. This particular painting stood out to me as the woman in the painting has a smile that draws the viewer in. It leaves you wondering who is making her smile from beyond the frame, however from other paintings in the collection it is possible to infer that each of the women are possibly posing for the famous painter while their friends and family look on, leaving them all with the same bashful yet joyous smile.
