Siege of Khazar

Artist:Khem Karan
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: Saint Louis Art Museum

This folio is a direct product of Akbar’s freshly established 'Kitabkhana' (royal library/workshop). Mughal history paintings from this era were never merely decorative; they were highly calculated works of political statecraft. By documenting grand military triumphs like the Siege of Khazar, Akbar was actively shaping his legacy. These illustrations served to visually legitimize the absolute military supremacy, tactical sophistication, and divine right of the Mughal lineage to both domestic subjects and visiting foreign dignitaries.
