Ranada Ukil (1900-1970) was a Bengali artist who was inspired by the artistic principles of Abanindranath Tagore, known for his graceful depictions of Indian mythology, literature, and culture. Shakuntala with Deer is an amalgam of his signature style. Inspired by the famous play Abhijnanashakuntalam (The Recognition of Shakuntala ) written by Kalidasa, Ukil portrays Shakuntala, the adopted daughter of Sage Kanva, in the quiet and spiritual atmosphere of the hermitage interacting with a deer. The deer serves as an important metaphor in the play, it symbolises Shakuntala’s sheltered innocence and vulnerability, while the pursuit of the deer by King Dushyanta foreshadows his affection for Shakuntala. Through this painting, Ranada Ukil captures a quiet moment between the deer and Shakuntala, bringing to the fore her relationship with nature, while also highlighting the tranquility of the hermitage and Shakuntala's purity. The soothing strokes of colours create a serene and dreamy effect of the hermitage whereas the simple background brings out the graceful figure of Shakuntala. The soft colours give the illusion of the serene and dream-like atmosphere of the hermitage while the plain background brings out the elegance of Shakuntala’s figure. In choosing to depict a scene from the classical literature of India, Ranada Ukil is not only celebrating the cultural heritage of India but he is also providing us with an idealized picture of femininity in harmony with nature.
