This magnificent Mughal miniature painting of the 17th century carried out approximately between 1630 and 1631 by the leading court artist Abid, shows the imperial splendour of the Mughal Empire at the height of its power. It depicts Emperor Shah Jahan entering triumphantly into his palace at Burhanpur, a strategically important city which acted as a key military and administrative centre during his expeditions in the Deccan. The scene is focused on Shah Jahan, who is seated with great dignity in an elaborate howdah covered with gold, situated on a grandly caparisoned royal elephant. A halo shines behind his head, visually confirming his divine right to rule and his position of supreme authority. He is surrounded by a tight group of attendants, royal horsemen and foot soldiers armed with spears and standards, all marching towards a white marble palace gateway on the right. The facial features of each figure and the fabrics they wear are shown with great individuality, illustrating the high degree of realism typical of the Indo-Mughal school. In terms of technique, the painting is a masterly example of opaque watercolour (gouache), ink and carefully applied gold leaf on paper. The main narrative section is bordered by several decorative bands of elaborate gold scrollwork, which then lead into a wide and sumptuous outer margin. This border is filled with dense, repeating patterns of gold-painted foliage together with brightly coloured birds, demonstrating the court's strong interest in naturalism. By combining political propaganda with such skilled aesthetic presentation this folio stands as a lasting illustration of the refined artistic tradition of the Shah Jahan period.
