Self-Portrait

Artist:Ren Xiong
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Ink
Current Location: Palace Museum, Beijing, China

This self-portrait feels not like a picture of a person but more like a strong message about who someone is. Ren Xiong shows himself on looking right at the person who is looking at the painting with a strong and maybe even challenging eye. The simple background makes sure all the focus is on his body, his clothes and his face. I think the difference between the face and chest and the big sharp clothes is really interesting. His big hands and feet and the large size of the painting make the person look very strong and tall.. The writing on the painting adds a different feeling showing that he is not sure about where he stands in a changing world. The painting seems to mix being weak with being strong. For me the painting shows an artist trying to show who he is and that he is important, at a time when it was not clear if people would care about him or his art. Making such a self-portrait is a way of being seen and keeping who you are.
