Seascape with Boats

Pestonji Bomanji's painting, Seascape with Boats, is a horizontally composed work created in oil on board. He was a Parsi painter who trained in the academic realist style at the Sir J.J. School of Art in Bombay, which he joined at the age of thirteen. His talent was recognised early on, leading to his appointment as a draughtsman on a significant expedition to reproduce the Ajanta cave murals, a project to which he dedicated nearly a decade of his life. Although he initially focused on sculpture, Bomanji eventually transitioned to portraiture. His artistic style blended Western academic aesthetics with Indian subjects and settings, earning him the nickname "The Indian Rembrandt" due to his unflattering, Dutch-influenced realism. Bomanji is primarily recognised for his portraits depicting Parsi life, which provide a rich ethnographic record of the community's customs and highlight the early involvement of its women in public life. However, he also excelled in landscape painting before fully dedicating himself to portraiture. His work "Seascape with Boats" exemplifies his mastery of landscape, showcasing his naturalistic academic technique applied to a marine subject rather than the figurative and allegorical styles for which he is more widely known. The painting is signed and dated "Pestonji Bomanji/ 1898" in the lower left corner. It portrays a bustling shore with boats and boatmen rendered in muted tones. The interplay of light and shadow creates a sense of calm despite the activity on the waterfront.
