Scenes from the Life of Saint Francis

This is the Stigmatization of St. Francis, one of the scenes from Benozzo Gozzoli's fresco cycle on the Life of St. Francis in the church of San Francesco in Montefalco, Umbria, painted around 1452 (Gozzoli was a pupil of Fra Angelico, and the influence shows in the clarity and warmth of the palette). The scene depicts the pivotal moment on Mount La Verna when Francis received the stigmata. He kneels in a rocky, golden landscape, arms raised toward a seraphic vision (now faded, appearing as the winged form above him), from which rays extend to mark his hands, feet, and side with Christ's wounds. His companion, Brother Leo, sits reading at left, looking up in astonishment rather than witnessing the vision directly, following the traditional account that only Francis saw the apparition. Gozzoli renders the setting with a distinctive stylized geological formation golden, faceted rock faces that feel almost sculptural rather than naturalistic, punctuated by slender cypress trees and a small monastic complex nestled below. The starry night sky in the upper register reinforces the scene's mystical, otherworldly register.Stylistically, this reflects the transition from International Gothic decorative detail toward early Renaissance spatial construction, while retaining a devotional, iconic quality suited to its function within a Franciscan church.
